Q - How much free space is required between the back of the oven and the wall of the house?
A - You can build the oven against the wall, just make sure that you leave enough room to render it.
Q - Once built does the oven need to be protected from the elements?
A - It will be fine outside exposed to the weather, however you can use protective paints if you wish.
Q - Does the oven get very hot during use?
A - The outside of the oven is very cool to touch.
Q - What surface do I need to build the oven onto?
A - We recommend that the oven be built onto a flat surface such as a table that can withstand 400 to 500 kilos or you can build a surface using limestone blocks.
Q - Are clay brick ovens better than concrete ovens?
A - Yes they are - Clay brick ovens sustain 20 to 30% more heat.
Q - Can I cook other foods such as large portions of meat in trays/dishes in the oven?
A - Our ovens can cook any dish that can be prepared in any other oven, but with the added flavour and qualities of wood fired cooking.
Q - Do I need to cook on metal pizza trays?
A - No, the cooking of `wood fired pizzas’ is preferably done directly on the fire bricks which make up the floor of the oven. Any food particles remaining on the bricks will normally quickly burn to ash and can be swept or wiped off as part of the normal routine removal of wood ash etc. before the next cooking cycle begins.
Q - How big should the base be?
A - The base should be 1.7 m deep and 1.1 m width
Q - How do I build the base?
A - The base should be made out of PATIO TUBING, allow about 10mm over length.
You will then need to get an angle grinder and cut a slot into the limestone of 55 mm, this is where the tubing will sit.
Then place the tubing into the cut slots and then , render with 4 parts sand 1 part cement, then lay 2 sheets of 6mm fiber cement board. There’s a great DVD on this website that shows you about building the base. Just click on the DVD section above and follow the prompts.
Q - Do you need any experience to build the oven?
A - Anyone can build our ovens, it’s really very simple to do, like putting a jigsaw puzzle together. When you purchase an oven you also get an instruction kit.
Q - How long does it take to build the oven?
A - It takes about 3 - 5 hours to complete the oven to its first render stage, at this point you need to allow the render to dry out, its best to leave it overnight. The next day you can fire up the oven, this will ensure that any remaining moisture in the oven has dried off, you can even cook on it at this point if you wish. Apply the final render along with the blanket and your oven is finished.
Q - What are the dimensions of your oven?
A - The ovens come in various sizes, you can find out more by going to the Standard Oven and Woody Oven pages.
Q - How long does it take to heat the oven?
A - It takes approximately 90 minutes to get the oven to a temperature of 400 degrees which is ideal for cooking pizzas.
Q - What kind of tool do you use to rake the coals?
A - We have a tool to do this task available from our accessories shop. Details can be found on the “Accessories” page.
Q - I don’t like the ashy, gritty pizza base that can sometimes come from cooking a pizza on the oven’s floor tiles. How do I stop this?
A - Before cooking, place a damp tea towel or clean rag on the end of a stick or poker and wipe the warm oven down.
Q - Do I need to clean my pizza oven?
A - The oven reaches temperatures that will burn off any substance that may fall from your food. When you have finished cooking, bring the wood forward to the cooking area and let the heat do the job for you. You may wish to use a damp cloth and wipe the cooking area clean before cooking directly on the cooking tiles if you don’t like the taste of ash on your food.
Q - What kind of wood is best to use?
A - The best wood to use is old recycled dark wood, white wood is very sappy and will create a great deal of smoke, so we advise something like old Jarrah or Mallyroot.
Q - How do you fire up the oven?
A - You can build a fire just as soon as the oven is dried, just use a jiffy firelighter add wood and off you go, there is even a DVD on this website that shows you how. Just click on the link below
